B1OLOGY (UK)

B1OLOGY, (Real name Adam Leeder) grew up in a town called Staines just outside London; which went on to change its name to Staines-Upon-Thames in an attempt to improve upon its reputation and links with the fictional TV character ‘Ali G’ and the ‘Staines Massive’.
Growing up in the era of Hip Hop and Breakdancing, Adam was heavily influenced by the mixing style featured on the Classic 1980s electro albums from Street Sounds. Inspired to experiment himself, he connected an old record player to a twin-cassette recording amp that allowed one of the cassette decks to be sped up or slowed down. By using the speed control to match the BPM of the track playing on the record player, he began creating his very first unconventional, but effective beat-matched mixes. The experience sparked his imagination and made him realise how much easier mixing would be if turntables had built-in pitch control.
By 1989, at a local party, he encountered such equipment for the first time: two Technics 1200 turntables. A friend of Adam’s, aware of his enthusiasm for mixing, persuaded the DJ to allow him an opportunity to perform. Browsing through the records, he selected ‘If Only I Could’ by Sydney Youngblood and ‘Break 4 Love’ by Raze. Knowing that both tracks shared the same drum loop, he understood the importance of accurately matching their BPMs.
Having come from modest and technically demanding beginnings experimenting with beat matching, he was astonished by how seamlessly two tracks could be synchronised using the Technics decks. The audience was captivated, including his friend, who immediately remarked, “Let’s go halves on a pair of Technics decks and some sound gear and do this ourselves.”
Before long, the pair became highly sought-after DJs, performing at numerous parties and events over the years.
Outside of DJing, they regularly attended some of the era’s most renowned illegal raves, including one known as Biology, which would later inspire the name B1ology.
Adam subsequently hosted a regular Techno programme on the pirate radio station Future FM, broadcasting from a block of flats in Tolworth, South West London.
Today, he dedicates much of his time to creating mixes for his YouTube channel and experimenting with his own productions from a modest home studio, (Harry Potter Style) tucked away beneath the stairs. It is remarkable to see how much can be accomplished within such a compact and ingeniously transformed space.
